The results of the Survey ( Survey monkey/ Google form )

  On social media, my partner and I asked people to answer some questions and will summarize it in this post.

Q1) Type in your Age, Gender, and Nationality

    Age = 18 to 62

    Gender = 7 Female & 3 Male

    Nationality = Japan, Canada, America, China 

Q2) Which country do you reside in? 

    All of the respondents answered Japan 

Q3) What examples of Gender Inequality can you think of? 

    Uneven opportunities at workplaces, Men’s sports being prioritized, Lack of reproductive freedom

    More sexual harassment or violence against women, Education, Transportation environments… 

Q4) Is it possible to eliminate Gender Inequality? 

    Yes (20%)

Q5) How do you think Gender Discrimination affects society? 

    - Younger generations are forced to grow up with crooked ideologies and the cycle of gender inequality keeps continuing 

    - Men are seen as superior to women in many cultures and there is often a lack of respect for women

    - More people will protest 

    - It leads to a situation in which women's contributions to society aren't recognized, and they are less likely to contribute productively to society.

    - It could lead to gender-based violence 

    - Uneasy society

 - Teach young people to respect women

 - Be able to think from the other person's perspective

Q10) What do you consider necessary for understanding gender discrimination? 

 - It is important to know that everyone is different and that we can not choose which gender we want to be when we are born 

 - Education

 - An open-minded attitude that not everything you believed growing up has to be true 

 - We need to listen to other people's experiences and perspectives in order to understand gender discrimination

 - Having classes to teach the young

Q1) How much do you think you know about "Gender Discrimination" in general? 

 -20% were not really familiar with the topic.

 -40% were on the other hand familiar with the topic.


Q2) What specific gender inequalities are you familiar with? (Tell us as much as you can) 

 -Pay gap between men and women in most industries; Women having to deal with much more physical and sexual harassment; too little representation by women in politics and in the higher levels of business.

 -Men go to work and women do the housework.


Q3) If you have been the victim of gender discrimination please describe the experience here.

 -"When I was a member of my junior high school student council, I changed the rule of who composed the members of it. I did it to spread the equal right to everyone."

 -"The way I was criticized for my lack of makeup and was once called a boy for it. I was told that women are meant to wear makeup."

 -"Being judged unjustly because of my gender, as well as being thought untrustworthy."


 Q4)Do you think it is important to learn about Gender discrimination? 

 100% of people thought it is vital to learn about Gender discrimination.


 Q5)What do you think of labeling gender on official forms or through pronouns?

 -50/50 situation. 

 Some people think it is unnecessary to label it and others think that people should have the freedom to how they want to express themselves.


 Q6)Do you think there is a significant difference between "Gender Discrimination" in America and Japan? 

 -86% yes. 

 -13% no.


 Q7)What differences can you think of? 

 -"US tends to be enthusiastic about gender issues and vice versa for Japan."

 -"It exists in both places, of course, but women are generally safer from violence committed by men in Japan (relatively) and women in Japan are less likely to identify as feminists or even understand what feminism is."

 -"America is much more diverse, whereas in Japan they still have the old ways of thinking."


 Q8)Do you think Gender Discrimination is a concern for men? And why?

 -"Not really. Because even if there are changes for women, there are not many for men."

 -"From personal experience, men tender to abbreviate explanations because they think women can't comprehend their way of thinking, and maybe the same for women."

 -"Not as much as it is for women. One of the roots of gender discrimination can be said to be misogynistic behavior."

 -"Many men are treated unjustly and unfairly because of their gender and are less likely to be trusted with important things, eg. child custody, etc. Another example would be the much higher rate of suicide, which suggests a difference in the mental state between males and females, which could be a factor of gender discrimination."

  1. I would be curious about the conclusions you reached based on the results you got. What patterns emerged in the data? What was similar about the findings in the two surveys, and what was different? It was encouraging that 100% of the respondents thought that it was important to learn more about gender discrimination. It was also relevant that the bulk of the respondents were undecided about whether gender discrimination could be eliminated. Both of those findings open up possibilities for the approach that an NGO addressing the issue might take.
